The Gaia Hypothesis, Part 4

June 20, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

In the first 3 parts of this series, we learned what the Gaia hypothesis (now Gaia theory) is; what led James Lovelock to realize this planet’s environment was being controlled from the surface; and how Gaia uses life to keep this planet comfortable. …

The Gaia Hypothesis, Part 3

June 14, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

In part 2 of this Gaia hypothesis series, we ended with the question: How to prove that Mother Earth lives? I like this question because it’s provocative, and it’s paraphrased from James Lovelock’s writing. It is, however, the only time I noted him …

Where Did the Goddess Go?

June 13, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

It seems she was usurped by the written word. That’s the case Leonard Shlain makes in his fascinating page-turner, The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image. He surveys human history showing that the rise of literacy …

The Gaia Hypothesis, Part 2

June 7, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

In part 1 of this Gaia hypothesis series, we left off with the question: What led Lovelock to suspect this planet wasn’t just a rock floating through space? At NASA, James Lovelock looked at ways to detect life on Mars by atmospheric analysis. He and …

The Gaia Hypothesis, Part 1

May 22, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

As a budding environmental science major in the 1990s, the Gaia hypothesis is one of the first concepts I remember learning. It was formulated in the 1960s by James Lovelock, a scientist working in NASA’s planetary exploration program.  The …

Why Aren’t We All Wanting to Be Babaji?

May 16, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

Autobiography of a Yogi is a powerful book. It’s a modern day account of the spiritual masters of India, written by someone who is himself considered a spiritual master of India.  Yogananda could have chosen to share his stories as allegories or …

A Way to Deal With Bugs

May 8, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

In Virginia, you either figure out a way to deal with bugs, or you stay inside all summer. It’s that simple. Unless you have a screened-in porch that serves as a nice midpoint. Having lived here my whole life, this is something I never thought much …

Balance

April 23, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

This little series of acrylic paintings is a meditation on balance and an experiment. It’s based on a symbol I’ve used for several years as a reminder: Wisdom flows from balance. The extremes of life are dramatic. They grab our attention and keep us …

A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes *lots* of animals, but her favorites mostly start with ‘p’ — puppy, panda, penguin, and of course, dolphin (porpoise?) 🎉

This was inspired by a fish drawing she made for me during the pandemic. She described it as a place where everyone is happy 🥲💗

My sister asked me to make an animal for her birth My sister asked me to make an animal for her birthday. I picked hummingbird. She told me her favorite color combination - orange + blue-green. The result, I think, is a tiny message of joy. ~May she find joy in unexpected places 🧡

P.S. There is an actual species of hummingbird that wears rainbow colors. O to V from tail to head 🤩

This is the most inspiring and inspired climate ch This is the most inspiring and inspired climate change discussion I've ever read. According to the author, it's completely doable to restore our climate to pre-industrial CO2 levels by 2050. (Of course, we need to reach net zero emissions, too.) The plan he lays out makes a lot of sense *and* seems to respect the Earth.

“People often ask me why I’m so confident that we can restore the climate. I tell them, “Because it’s been done before.” Nature has removed massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 10 times in the last million years, and likely many more times before then.” - Peter Fiekowsky, Climate Restoration

I’m feeling a renewed sense of optimism for the future. You can find more discussion on my blog. Link is in my profile.

Check out the book and see what you think.
