The Climate Conversation Has Changed

November 1, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

It’s no longer just about net-zero carbon emissions. Now it’s about net-zero carbon emissions AND climate restoration. That’s right, our new goal is to restore our climate to CO2 levels that will allow future humans to evolve and flourish.  …

A More Dignified Way of Life + How the Medicine Man Learned From Animals

July 8, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

For weeks after I read this book, I couldn’t speak about it without crying. Not because I was sad about what we did to the Native American people — I was, but that’s not why. I felt devastated that I had not lived my whole life with the sense of …

Where Did the Goddess Go?

June 13, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

It seems she was usurped by the written word. That’s the case Leonard Shlain makes in his fascinating page-turner, The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word and Image. He surveys human history showing that the rise of literacy …

The Right Brain Is Supposed to Be in Charge

April 18, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

This book will help you better understand your inner world, the human condition, and how Western society has ended up in such a dysfunctional state.  Have I mentioned that I’m somewhat obsessed with understanding the inner workings of our left …

The Book That Explained Patriarchy to Me

February 8, 2022 by Claiborne Ashby

If you’re born into a system, and so are those who raise you and live around you, it’s very difficult to recognize the system — until someone finds all the research on the time before the system existed, and then writes a book.  In The …

Ocean As Mother

December 18, 2021 by Claiborne Ashby

Rachel Carson has forever changed the way I see the ocean, and I don’t know how she did it.  I was going to give you some passages depicting the ocean as a mother: who unceasingly circulates her bodily currents across distant shores and open …

A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes *lots* of animals, but her favorites mostly start with ‘p’ — puppy, panda, penguin, and of course, dolphin (porpoise?) 🎉

This was inspired by a fish drawing she made for me during the pandemic. She described it as a place where everyone is happy 🥲💗

My sister asked me to make an animal for her birth My sister asked me to make an animal for her birthday. I picked hummingbird. She told me her favorite color combination - orange + blue-green. The result, I think, is a tiny message of joy. ~May she find joy in unexpected places 🧡

P.S. There is an actual species of hummingbird that wears rainbow colors. O to V from tail to head 🤩

This is the most inspiring and inspired climate ch This is the most inspiring and inspired climate change discussion I've ever read. According to the author, it's completely doable to restore our climate to pre-industrial CO2 levels by 2050. (Of course, we need to reach net zero emissions, too.) The plan he lays out makes a lot of sense *and* seems to respect the Earth.

“People often ask me why I’m so confident that we can restore the climate. I tell them, “Because it’s been done before.” Nature has removed massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 10 times in the last million years, and likely many more times before then.” - Peter Fiekowsky, Climate Restoration

I’m feeling a renewed sense of optimism for the future. You can find more discussion on my blog. Link is in my profile.

Check out the book and see what you think.
