Celebrating the Equinox

March 22, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

It’s spring, and I made a photo to mark the occasion. The spring equinox happened this week. As I understand it, that means that for one day the Earth rotated into a mostly parallel alignment with the sun, and we, meaning everyone on the planet, had …

What Nature Says

March 13, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

They will tell you, Look to nature and feel that you are small. But Nature will tell you, Look to the sky and know that You are vast. Look to the ocean and know that You are deep. Look to the mountains and know that You are grand. Your size is only a …

Invoking Gratitude the Haudenosaunee Way

February 20, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

I’ve been deep into reading books by Native American authors and recently discovered the Thanksgiving Address, also translated as Greetings and Thanks to the Natural World. It brought tears to my eyes as I read it in Starbucks, so maybe you will find …

Weather ~ A Native American Perspective

January 30, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

How do we begin to live in greater harmony with the Earth? We can buy things that are less toxic, recycle our cardboard boxes, and refuse single use plastics, but those are surface activities. Important, yes, but they just help us do less damage. …

The Trees Are Talking [video]

November 19, 2018 by Claiborne Ashby

“When you are next in [the woods], you might like to think of trees as part of a big superorganism, chatting and swapping information and food under your feet.”   This fun (and short) video explains what scientists are …

Gerbera Daisies

October 10, 2018 by Claiborne Ashby

Daisies are a symbol of cheerfulness. They look up at us with their sunny faces and offer us a physical reminder of brightness and positivity. I don’t think they want us to force a smile and soldier on through life. I think they encourage us to …

A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes *lots* of animals, but her favorites mostly start with ‘p’ — puppy, panda, penguin, and of course, dolphin (porpoise?) 🎉

This was inspired by a fish drawing she made for me during the pandemic. She described it as a place where everyone is happy 🥲💗

My sister asked me to make an animal for her birth My sister asked me to make an animal for her birthday. I picked hummingbird. She told me her favorite color combination - orange + blue-green. The result, I think, is a tiny message of joy. ~May she find joy in unexpected places 🧡

P.S. There is an actual species of hummingbird that wears rainbow colors. O to V from tail to head 🤩

This is the most inspiring and inspired climate ch This is the most inspiring and inspired climate change discussion I've ever read. According to the author, it's completely doable to restore our climate to pre-industrial CO2 levels by 2050. (Of course, we need to reach net zero emissions, too.) The plan he lays out makes a lot of sense *and* seems to respect the Earth.

“People often ask me why I’m so confident that we can restore the climate. I tell them, “Because it’s been done before.” Nature has removed massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 10 times in the last million years, and likely many more times before then.” - Peter Fiekowsky, Climate Restoration

I’m feeling a renewed sense of optimism for the future. You can find more discussion on my blog. Link is in my profile.

Check out the book and see what you think.
