How Marie Kondo Helped Me Hear My Heart (this is not about tidying)

December 4, 2021 by Claiborne Ashby

If you’re not used to listening to your heart, it can seem like a real mystery. Or at least it did to me. Sometime after I entered my 30s, I became deeply despondent about life. I was struggling with the dual challenges of being unhappily single and …

What If There Isn’t Anything Wrong With You?

November 19, 2021 by Claiborne Ashby

It’s easy to look at what other people are doing and think you’re failing, or defective, or somehow just wrong; what’s hard is to listen to your own heart, and to trust it. I spent most of my early 30s secretly wondering if there was something …

A Giving Practice and a Resource

November 4, 2021 by Claiborne Ashby

In Native American cultures giving was a way of life. They made generosity a tribal value and created ceremonies and rituals to weave it into the fabric of daily living. If you had a baby, you were expected to give away your best horses. If you were …

Moving Beyond Grief

October 20, 2021 by Claiborne Ashby

They say when someone close to you dies, you’ll grieve the loss forever, and the depth and duration of your sadness shows how much you loved the person.  Experience tells me you can go on loving a person long after they’re gone, but you have to …

Earth School: What I’ve Learned During Covid (so Far)

October 6, 2021 by Claiborne Ashby

If Earth is a school for souls, and I believe that it is, Covid has been like the fire drill that shook everybody up. We were all sitting in class as usual when the alarm sounded and we had to head for the doors in emergency mode. Now we’re slowly …

Ego v. Self

October 17, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

If you’re a human walking around on this planet, there are two parts of you. These parts are physically demonstrated by your brain. It has two sides, the left and the right, and they each have different worldviews. The left brain lives through …

Plastic Bag Replacements

September 13, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

I know. The Amazon is burning and hurricanes are happening, so do plastic bags still matter? I had the same thought when I started to write this, but I think the most powerful thing we can do in the face of large-scale disasters is look at our own …

Do You Know What You’re Doing?

July 12, 2019 by Claiborne Ashby

I’ve started several new personal projects in the last year, from writing blog posts and (gasp) sharing them to painting on my own rather than in a class with a teacher. From the outside this looks like solitary work, but on the inside I have a …

A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes A dolphin for my niece’s 8th birthday. She likes *lots* of animals, but her favorites mostly start with ‘p’ — puppy, panda, penguin, and of course, dolphin (porpoise?) 🎉

This was inspired by a fish drawing she made for me during the pandemic. She described it as a place where everyone is happy 🥲💗

My sister asked me to make an animal for her birth My sister asked me to make an animal for her birthday. I picked hummingbird. She told me her favorite color combination - orange + blue-green. The result, I think, is a tiny message of joy. ~May she find joy in unexpected places 🧡

P.S. There is an actual species of hummingbird that wears rainbow colors. O to V from tail to head 🤩

This is the most inspiring and inspired climate ch This is the most inspiring and inspired climate change discussion I've ever read. According to the author, it's completely doable to restore our climate to pre-industrial CO2 levels by 2050. (Of course, we need to reach net zero emissions, too.) The plan he lays out makes a lot of sense *and* seems to respect the Earth.

“People often ask me why I’m so confident that we can restore the climate. I tell them, “Because it’s been done before.” Nature has removed massive amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 10 times in the last million years, and likely many more times before then.” - Peter Fiekowsky, Climate Restoration

I’m feeling a renewed sense of optimism for the future. You can find more discussion on my blog. Link is in my profile.

Check out the book and see what you think.
